What is my check purpose?
When applying for a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC), you must provide a check purpose. This is a detailed explanation of why the check is required, who has requested it, and where it will be used.
The check purpose helps the relevant police agencies determine what information should be included on your final certificate.
What information makes up your check purpose?
Your check purpose includes three sections:
- Role or Reason - Why you need the check (e.g. employment, student placement, rental application, fostering/adoption, firearm licence). For employment, include your job title/role.
- Organisation - The employer or organisation requesting the check. If not yet employed, list the industry you intend to work in (e.g. aged care industry, mining industry).
- Location - Where the check will be used, not where you live (e.g. Perth for FIFO work in WA).

Making sure your check purpose is valid
When completing your check purpose:
- Only one role or reason can be listed per application. If you need a check for multiple purposes, submit separate applications.
- The role must be specific (e.g. "Registered Nurse" rather than "employment" or "contractor").
- Personal record keeping is not an accepted purpose.
- In some cases, an AFP Check may be required instead of a NCCHC. Be sure to confirm which check is needed before applying.
