What is my purpose?

When completing a National Police Check (NPC) you need to provide a "purpose" as part of your application. Your purpose is a detailed explanation of why you need this police check, including who has asked for the check and the location this check will be used at.

Your purpose is particularly important as it helps the different police agencies determine what information should/shouldn't be included in your final certificate.

What information makes up your purpose?

Your final purpose is made of the following 4 pieces of information:

Role or Reason for the check.

You may not always be applying for a NPC for employment reasons, but this field should be thought of as the "reason" you need this check. The most common roles/reasons we see include:

  • Employment - in this case you need to list your job title
  • Student placements/enrolment- see here for more information on student purposes.
  • Rental applications.
  • Fostering/adoption applications.
  • Firearm licenses

Our team will review your purpose to ensure it meets the requirements, so just to be as specific as possible about the reason you need this NPC and we will be in touch if we need more information.

Organisation

This may be your employer or who has asked you to provide the NPC.

If you are not yet employed by a particular company you may wish to list the industry you looking to work within eg: "mining industry" or "aged care industry".

Location

This is the location where your check will be used not where you are. For example if you are doing FIFO work in WA but live in NSW, you need to list the WA location.

This information helps ensure the right spent conviction legislation is considered for your application as each state has their own legislation.

Access to Vulnerable groups

This provides insights into the level of access you will have to vulnerable members of society. You can read more about how to choose the right option here.

Making sure your purpose is valid

There are only a few rules you need to be aware of when completing your purpose:

  • Only 1 role can be listed on the purpose. If you need NPC's for multiple reasons then you will need to submit multiple applications.
  • The role must be specific for example "employment, casual or sub-contractor" are not acceptable.
  • Personal record keeping isn't an accepted purpose.
  • A NPC isn't always the right certificate, some times you may need an AFP check. You can read more about AFP's here.
