Why was my check selected for manual review?

To ensure the accuracy of your final result, the information you provide throughout your application is compared to all relevant police databases and any similarities between your personal information and the personal information on any police records, in Australia, may trigger a review to occur.

This means your details do not need to match exactly to trigger the review process.

Example:

John James Smith born 01/01/2000 will likely be required for manual review since John Andrew Smythe born 01/02/2001 has history on one or more criminal history databases.

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) has provided a video explaining the process in detail along with some other FAQs here.

NOTE: If your check has been identified as having a similarity to someone with a police record, it is likely any future police checks you submit will also be reviewed in the same way. We recommend that any future police checks you need to submit you allow at least 3 weeks for your results.
